All people have the right to weigh the risks and benefits of any medical intervention, for themselves and minor family members taking into consideration their individual medical and personal circumstances, in determining whether or not to undergo any intervention. Both the risks and the benefits of the proposed intervention must be equally communicated and accessible. All decisions made by an individual, whether to participate or abstain, must be recognized as equally valid without bias, consequence, or retaliation. Informed consent prior to any medical intervention is a basic human right.
